Probing interkingdom crosstalk during inflammation

Duration of contract: 4 years
Planned starting date: Jan 2024 - March 2024
Place of work: University of Vienna

Main supervisor: Martin Polz (CV | Lab Homepage
Supervision team: Clarissa Campbell, Andreas Bergthaler

This position has been filled.

Project description:

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a background in microbiology and/or bioinformatics. The PhD project will be focused on the role of phage in modulating microbial community structure in different infection models. In particular, we will pursue the question whether the shifting chemical milieu during infection can induce prophage leading to increased cell lysis and ultimately induce changes in microbiome community composition. The work will employ microbial community analysis by metagenomics in mouse models as well as laboratory bacterial and phage culturing.  The main training will be in the Polz lab in close collaboration with the Campbell (CeMM) and Bergthaler (CeMM/MedUni) labs via joint weekly lab meetings.
