CoE Key Researcher David Berry shares the latest insights into the role of the gut microbiome for human health.

CoE Key Researcher David Berry from the Centre for Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science at the University of Vienna was featured in an EXTRA issue of the Austrian newspaper Profil.

In this special issue focusing on how to sustainably support increasing life and health expectancy, David shares the latest insights into the role of the gut microbiome for human health. He reflects: ‘To ensure that your microbiome can serve your health, it is important to maintain a balanced diet rich in fiber, based on fermented foods with probiotic properties and including plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.’

David cautions against unsustainable promises in the current boom surrounding the microbiome, not just concerning commercial probiotic products, special diets, or biome tests. He warns against over-interpreting previous scientific results and calls for focusing on developing evidence-based solutions that are accessible to the general public.
