Still image of ‘Die Macht der Mikroben’ documentary by French filmmaker Marie Monique Robin.
The film addresses the loss of microbiome biodiversity that can have far-reaching consequences for human health. The so-called ‘diseases of civilization’ appear to have their origins in the loss of this natural resource: Asthma, inflammatory bowel disease, diabetes, obesity, mental disorders, depression, and even cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease. They all seem to have something in common – microbial dysbiosis, immune imbalance, and low-grade inflammation.
The scientific findings have policy implications for planning cities, schools, and hospitals – because they suggest that protecting microbiome biodiversity is essential to preserving our health.
The documentary will be broadcast on Austrian and Swiss national television in the coming months.
